Ground mutton
Ground mutton
The word mutton gets a bad rap, but it is simply mature lamb or in essence sheep. Anything over 13 months old is mutton.
A lamb becomes a sheep after 13 months of age. Female lambs are bred at 9 months old and have their first lamb between 13-14 months of age. Male lambs and female lambs become mature at 7-8 months of age. Hope this clarifies the lamb, sheep and mutton definitions for you.
in Europe and most of Eurasia and the Middle East, sheep and lamb is eaten. Mutton/sheep has a slightly stronger flavor than lamb but not by much.
We make ground mutton out of our mature sheep who do not produce lambs anymore. They retired out of the flock, usually spending a year grazing with no lambs by their sides, happily eating. The most humane practice for a retired sheep is to process her for meat close by or on farm, not sell her through an auction barn where most buyers of sheep send them to some unknown and scary place usually a long distance away and are crammed into a semi truck with all kinds of different sheep.
You can use our ground mutton to cook with yourself, it is delicious! But we know there is a stigma in the US with the word mutton, so we also suggest it can be used for your pets meals. Many pet lovers feed their beloved furry “kids” human food, and none of that dried kibble. Ground meat and bones are a good and healthy alternative to kibble. Mix in some fruit and veggies for some wonderful grain free food for your pets!
